Community Disaster Relief Fund

Leer en Español

Give to help your neighbors through disasters.

Our communities in Santa Barbara County have proven time and again to be resilient in times of disaster. The Community Disaster Relief Fund was created to support our county during times of crisis and has previously been activated to respond to disasters such as the Thomas Fire and 1/9 Debris Flow, the COVID-19 pandemic, and last year’s winter storms which caused major damage in North County and elsewhere.

Update as of February 5, 2024: Santa Barbara County is experiencing a major storm with potentially life-threatening impacts for Santa Barbara County. Detailed weather forecasts are available at https://www.weather.gov/lox/.

If you are 70½ or older, you can use your individual retirement account (IRA) to make a gift to benefit the Community Disaster Relief Fund. IRA charitable rollover gifts will lower the income and taxes from your IRA-required minimum distributions. Charitable Rollover Gifts allow you to:

  • Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from your IRA
  • Satisfy some or all of your required minimum distribution for the year
  • Reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions
  • Make a gift that is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts

Attention Donor Advised Fundholders: Federal law does not allow DAFs to accept Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from IRAs. However, QCD gifts made as unrestricted gifts to the Santa Barbara Foundation do qualify.
