Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara Hosts Gathering for New Members

Thirty new and prospective members of the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara (WFSB) gathered August 3 at the Foundation House to learn about the goals and accomplishments of the fund.  Established in 2004, the WFSB has distributed more than $5.6 million to organizations in southern Santa Barbara County.  Co-chair Nancy Harter, welcomed the group and described the work of the women’s fund, “Women pool their contributions, perform vigilant research and due diligence on nonprofits and programs serving women, children and families. The membership then votes on a slate of organizations, and grants are awarded to local charities who have met a strictly defined criteria.”  Mary Genis, chair of the fund’s research committee, detailed the rigor of the work performed and the lens through which the committee analyzes each potential grantee.  The group “leaves no stone unturned,” agreed Luann Miller, Executive Director of Isla Vista Youth Projects, who spoke about the impact the fund’s grants have had on her organization.

As the fund’s fiscal sponsor, the Santa Barbara Foundation often collaborates with the WFSB. The foundation’s Chief Philanthropic Officer, Jan Campbell, shared that “many of the agencies and programs supported by the Women’s Fund are also funded with our own discretionary grants as well as by our donor advisors – but some great community programs would go unnoticed if it were not for the eyes and ears the women’s fund researchers. “The fund’s wide outreach and careful vetting, leverages more philanthropic dollars into the community.”

In summing up the impact of this collective giving fund, Miller affirmed, “I’m here this afternoon to tell you how the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara changes lives. How thoughtful, intentional giving can exponentially make a difference in our community.”
