The Santa Barbara Foundation received $33.47 million in gifts designated by donors to specific charitable causes last year – the highest amount of restricted gifts that the foundation has received within the past five years. This $33.47 million makes up the bulk of the foundation’s total contributions of $34.08 million.

“We pride ourselves in being an organization that inspires trust in donors desiring to centralize their giving and seek guidance about how to support the causes they care about while also maximizing their philanthropic dollars in the community,” said Jan Campbell, Chief Philanthropic Officer and Senior Vice President.

Last year with the support of donor gifts, the foundation was able to serve 971 nonprofits countywide with 2,524 grants totaling over $22.77 million in 2016. Thanks to healthy financial markets that spurred giving, $16.04 million charitable dollars came in during the final quarter of the year. Additionally, some gifts in 2016 were the result of the IRS statute that allows individual retirement account (IRA) holders ages seventy-and-a-half or older to gift the required minimum distribution to charity tax-free.

“Throughout the year, our fundholders demonstrated a strong philanthropic spirit, but year-end was the time when they recommended the majority of grants to local and national nonprofit organizations,” said Jessica Sanchez, Senior Donor Relations Officer. “Up until December 31, 2016 grant distributions were processed from our donor advised funds, with more than 530 grants processed in the month of December - 2016 was definitely a busy, but wonderful year at the Santa Barbara Foundation!”

The Santa Barbara Foundation is proud to continue to fulfill the philanthropic wishes and legacies of its donors to address important needs and opportunities in the community and make Santa Barbara County an even better place to live.
