Emergency Grants

On rare occasions, the Foundation may respond to a nonprofit organization’s critical emergency outside of the designated grant cycles. Emergency grants can support agencies that experience a sudden, unanticipated event that drastically impacts its ability to provide services. The costs should be substantial enough that they cannot be covered by the organization’s operating budget. Emergency grants are limited to $25,000. An organization is not eligible to receive more than two emergency grants in any five-year period.

Emergency grants are made under two types of scenarios:

  1. An emergency that involves an agency’s physical plant. The leaky roof, the defective water heater, etc. falls into this category and may result/has resulted in the cessation of operations.

  2. An emergency that involves the fiscal health of the agency. An agency that finds itself in financial trouble and has to consider shutting down, cutting back essential services, etc. would fall into this category. The Foundation would need to know the circumstances behind the agency’s problems and the debt would have to be manageable in order for us to feel our contribution could make a difference.
It is unlikely that an organization with no granting history with the Foundation would be considered for this type of grant. To find out if your situation meets the emergency criteria, please speak with the Program Officer assigned to your organization.
