The Arts

Thanks to a generous grant from The James Irvine Foundation, the Santa Barbara Foundation will offer supplementary grants to arts organizations through the Communities Advancing the Arts Initiative.

The Santa Barbara Foundation is one of eight community foundations selected by The James Irvine Foundation to promote and support the arts through the Irvine Foundation's Communities Advancing the Arts Initiative.

State and federal budget constraints and other factors have reduced the level of public funding for the arts, which are increasingly dependent on support from private sources. State funding in California is at an all-time low: three cents per person per year.

Why Support the Arts?

  • It feels good – art has a beneficial effect on society in general
  • It supports good things –  art education helps kids succeed
  • It needs your involvement – local art needs local donors

The Santa Barbara Foundation’s "Communities Advancing the Arts" Initiative has four main goals:

  1. Create a task force made up of representatives from area arts organizations to identify ways to strengthen and sustain arts programming, and develop strategies to support smaller arts organizations.
  2. Enhance donor education in order to create future support for the arts in Santa Barbara County.

    How you can help:
  3. Support the arts through our competitive grant program (more) and implement a mini-grant program for small to mid-size arts organizations. Click here for details.
