Social Venture Partners Santa Barbara
Social Venture Partners Santa Barbara is part of a global network of local partners connecting passion and purpose—creating greater impact, rallying around a shared vision, strengthening nonprofits, and enriching the social sector. One person joins many and together, SVPSB partners are better able to solve the most entrenched problems in our community.
SVP looks into the community to identify needs and potential solutions in the same way that a venture capitalist would try to find good ideas and entrepreneurship in emerging companies. Venture capitalists not only find a company and make an investment of dollars, but also assess the company's overall needs, infusing that company with the knowledge, skills, and contacts of its partners. Their time and expertise are as important as providing funds to help a new business move toward profitability. Similarly, SVP invests in sustainability and organizational capacity of nonprofit organizations by taking a long-term approach, providing professional expertise and working together toward annual objectives and measurable outcomes.
SVPSB partners Marybeth Carty, Evan Aptaker, and Rinaldo Brutuco.
Investing for Success: How SVPSB Invests
- Select Focus Areas: Each year, partners select and vote on focus areas for investment.
- Research: A team researches the focus areas, interviews experts and determines the greatest impact SVPSB can make.
- Due Diligence: Partner teams rigorously vet the nonprofit applicants.
- Vote: After review and discussion, the partners select the nonprofit investees, who receive a cash grant, but more importantly, a partner team of consultants who provide expertise, skills and connections.
