Ramon Guerrero - Loan Opens Door to Medicine and Winemaking
He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, but was raised in Santa Barbara. About to graduate from Santa Barbara High School, Ramon Guerrero applied for a student loan through the Santa Barbara Foundation. His request granted, he headed for Carleton College in Minnesota to study biology. “It was very inspirational to receive a loan. Without it I would never have been able to buy an airplane ticket to Minnesota,” says Ramon.
After college, he fled Minnesota’s cold winters and returned to the sun to attend medical school at U.C. Davis. Ramon had intended to become a general surgeon but realized that time with his two small children was more important. He switched to anesthesiology. A former professor invited him to complete his anesthesiology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. Ramon is now in private practice in Plano, Texas.
Somehow Ramon also found time to establish a medical device company whose goal is to provide safe and simple ways to administer multiple medications with the goal of preventing hospital acquired infections. His company, IntraSafe, has patented medical technology, which provides medical practitioners a safe and cost effective method of administering multiple intravenous medications without needles. In the United States more than 100,000 patients die needlessly in our hospitals. Through these devices, Ramon hopes to change the current practice of medication administration.
Santa Barbara still beckons, however. Ramon and his wife purchased a small property in Santa Ynez, which the family visits every few months. Ramon planted two acres of grapes in 2001 and celebrated the very first bottling of Meadowlark Vineyards wine this year. He has long since repaid his loan but continues to send regular donations. He has no doubt raised a glass or two of his recent vintage in honor of the Santa Barbara Foundation!
