Thomas Yee - Freeway Philharmonic

He came to the Foundation at the age of 10 seeking a music scholarship. Now years later, Thomas Yee has won a prestigious violin position with the Santa Barbara Symphony where he will be playing alongside many of the judges who awarded him scholarships over the years.

“The Foundation music scholarships have been a constant amazing factor of aid throughout my violin studies. I would not be in the position I am today had it not been for aid for private lessons during my prep years, then throughout college for tuition expenses. I am deeply and forever grateful for the help I have received,” he says.

Thomas has experienced an amazing musical journey since his boyhood in Santa Barbara. He was the winner of several Santa Barbara area scholarships and competitions, including the Alice Nelson Music Competition, Performing Arts Scholarship Competition, Santa Barbara Foundation Music Scholarship, Santa Barbara Music Club, the Profant Foundation, and the Léni Fé Bland Scholarship. He completed a Bachelor’s of Music degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2005, and a Master's of Music in 2007 at the Conservatory where he served as a rotating concertmaster with the conservatory orchestra, studying with Alexander Barantschik, concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony.

Today, he is a Bay Area professional "Freeway Philharmonic" musician performing with the Santa Rosa, Napa Valley, and Monterey symphonies, as well as the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, and Berkeley Opera. He is passing on his knowledge to youth, assisting the El Camino and San Jose Youth Symphonies. “In addition to performance, teaching is a passion of mine. I hope to continue to pass on my knowledge of music and the violin to future generations in the San Francisco and Santa Barbara areas.”

When he puts down his violin, Thomas enjoys competitive basketball, collecting sneakers, running, cooking and dining out, and maintaining a busy social life. The Foundation is pleased to have contributed to Thomas’ success.
