Santa Barbara Foundation Invest $600,000 in Community Caregiving Initiative to Support Research and Innovation

The Santa Barbara Foundation awarded close to $600,000 in grants to advance research and innovation among partner organizations of the Community Caregiving Initiative (CCI). These organizations include the Atlas of Caregiving, Alzheimer’s Association – Central California Chapter, Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, Family Service Agency, Foundation for Santa Barbara Regional Health Authority (for the Santa Barbara County Coalition in Support of Promotores de Salud), Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare Organization, and the Marian Regional Medical Center Foundation. Families Caring for an Aging America

In September, the Santa Barbara Foundation joined fourteen other sponsors in the public release of Families Caring for an Aging America, a report published by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. The publication details the prevalence and nature of family caregiving of older adults as well as its personal impact on caregivers’ health, economic security, and overall well-being.

Healthcare and Senior Caregiving Organizations Come Together in Santa Ynez Valley

Last month, representatives from healthcare and senior caregiving organizations serving the Santa Ynez Valley came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities that we can anticipate among the growing, aging population and those who love and care for them. Community Comes Together to Support Caregivers in Lompoc

With the support of community leaders and partners, the City of Lompoc has launched Caring Together Lompoc, a public awareness campaign to help people self-identify as a “caregiver” and understand they are not alone in their efforts.


Broadening Access to Therapy for Family Caregivers

For his show “In the Public Interest,” local radio host Jim Sirianni recently sat down with Cynthia McNulty of the Family Service Agency (FSA) and Mariela Marin of Antioch University to talk about the launch of a new caregiver support training program—a collaborative effort between FSA, Antioch, the Alzheimer's Association, and the Santa Barbara Foundation.


Putting Family Caregiving on the Map

Can a map help you understand and improve your experience caring for a family member? Recently, the Santa Barbara Foundation and the Atlas of Caregiving brought dozens of family caregivers, social workers, and health professionals together to determine just that in a series of free workshops across Santa Barbara County. Participants learned about and created care maps—helpful ways to visually represent all the people and services involved in a family caregiving situation.
