Larry Crandell

Commonly known as ‘Mr. Santa Barbara’, Larry Crandell exhibited grace and candor through his calling as a volunteer fundraiser for local nonprofits. Crandell was the community cheerleader that inspired and challenged us to support a vast array of organizations that serve the community. He was a true gentleman, chivalrous and kind, and was able to convey honest appreciation for anyone he encountered. Crandell had a love for people and his jokes were all the funnier because of his amazing sense of timing, quirk, and his altruistic ability to laugh at himself.

The Santa Barbara Foundation was proud to name Crandell as Man of the Year in 1988. This annual celebration that will occur once again in March of 2017, was a delight of Crandell as he contributed as emcee for numerous years for the award celebration. Being in the spotlight in front of the illustrious crowd allowed Crandell to exhibit his candid humor and highlight philanthropic work that needed to be done. His involvement with this ceremony also brought him closer to understanding the breadth of work cultivated by the Santa Barbara Foundation. Being a donor himself, he believed in the Foundation and its support for the valuable work of our local nonprofits.

Ron Gallo, President and CEO of the Santa Barbara Foundation, expressed his sympathy, “Larry embodied the heart and true meaning of philanthropy in Santa Barbara. His altruism and deep level of community engagement made our county stronger and more resilient.” Gallo also remarked, “His legacy will live on in the many thriving organizations that he supported throughout the years to achieve social good.”
