Love is in the Air
This Valentine’s Day, the foundation asked some of our donors to share the story of how they met their partners and why they love to give – together.
Sarah and Daniel Zia
The Zia's have a donor advised fund with the Santa Barbara Foundation.
Sarah and Daniel Zia have been married for a little over 11 years after meeting on a campus tour of Westmont College when they were seniors in high school. He was visiting from a small town on the coast of Oregon and she was visiting from San Diego and when they caught each other’s eyes, it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship and they were married three years later.
“We both love the act of giving to charities and organizations we believe are really making a difference in the world,” said Sarah. “It excites and unites us as a couple to have the privilege of sitting down and prayerfully deciding who we are going to send funds to. We feel honored and humbled to be able to do so, it is one of our great joys in life. We love knowing that lives are being touched, saved, and restored, through the funds that pass through our hearts and hands.”
For Sarah and Daniel, the best part about giving together is seeing how their passions for philanthropy continue to be in alignment even as their interests change and evolve. They believe the act of giving together always strengthens their bond as a couple.
Jan and Randy Campbell
Jan Campbell is the Chief Philanthropic Officer and Senior Vice President of the Santa Barbara Foundation and also has a donor advised fund.
Jan and Randy Campbell met on a plane going to New York while she was living in Los Angeles. She was on her way to a client meeting and he was going to a newspaper conference and sat down next to her and started chatting. Four months later, Jan moved to Santa Barbara and three years later, they got married and have been for 29 years.
When asked why they give as a couple, Jan said, “We support organizations that have meaning for our families. For the most part we support education, women, women’s issues, diabetes research and organizations that protect civil liberties.”
They believe the best part about giving together is getting their two daughters involved because it has been very rewarding to see what they support.
Anne and Michael Towbes
Anne and Michael Towbes have separate donor advised funds with the Santa Barbara Foundation
Anne and Michael Towbes have been happily married for over 11 years. Michael met Anne when she was the president of the Lobero Theatre Board of Directors and Michael donated funds to name the theater’s auditorium after his late wife, Gail. Anne took him out to lunch to thank him and that was that!
Anne and Michael like to give locally to areas where they feel they can have the most impact, specifically in arts, education, historic preservation and social causes.
“It gives us both great pleasure to support so many worthwhile organizations that help make Santa Barbara such a wonderful, caring community,” said Anne. “We are all in this together!”
