Message from the President & CEO: June 2017

For nearly ninety years the Santa Barbara Foundation has held the promise and aspirations of the communities that make up this beautiful county. From the start, we have supported efforts, programs and organizations that are in some meaningful way building vibrant communities.

What are vibrant communities? They are places where every resident throughout their lifetime has the opportunity to improve themselves and their families. Education, from the earliest years through the senior years, is valued, affordable and accessible. They are inclusive and safe from bigotry and discrimination. Creativity and artistic expression are encouraged and supported. They are empathetic and celebratory. These communities care about equitable economic development and the conservation of natural resources. One’s personal finances do not determine access to quality healthcare. They possess an unshakable commitment to due process under the law. And they are welcoming to the newly arrived, understanding that as a nation of immigrants, our economy and our national narrative have always been stronger when we recognize and embrace the ambitions and contributions of those who seek a better life through the American dream of freedom and opportunity.

What ties all these components of a vibrant community together are civility, mutual respect, and the understanding that being open to difference and alternative perspectives is the surest way to identify and reinforce what we have in common. The Santa Barbara Foundation, now more than ever, is committed to energizing our better instincts, connectivity, and our responsibilities as individuals and as members of a larger whole to make sure that vibrant communities are present throughout the county. In so doing, we champion and help others to bring about a level of adaptability and resilience that ensures the best possible future for our county.

Toward this end, the Santa Barbara Foundation continues to do what it does best: identify and support individuals, efforts, programs and organizations that focus on building and maintaining community vibrancy and resilience. We continue to work in partnership with old and new friends and across all sectors. We have made additional and agile financial resources available for our work during this time of major transition.

Most of all, we remain committed to keeping our ears and minds open and to using every tool at our disposal to uphold and promote the values expressed in this statement.
